Summer 2015

1. What is your name?

Brad G. Oliphant.

2. What is the title of your new book?

ENLIGHTENED BLOOMS, Solarized Diptych Floral Photographs.

3. When was the book published and by whom?

The book was published by Glitterati Incorporated. Its release date was this April 1st of 2015.

4. What other books have you authored?

I recently published another small table-top book titled: LESSONS IN LOVE—Truths and Mediations from A Course in Miracles. This book was published by Sterling Ethos Publishings.

5. What section should this new book be shelved under?

I believe it would be shelved under “Photography, Nature Photography, and/or Fine Art Photography.” It could also be found under “Flower Photography.”

6. What is the book about? What is its plot, focus, or subject?

Enlightened Blooms is a large tabletop book showcasing a large collection of floral macro photography. The images are presented in a side-by-side format (diptych) where each flower has been mirrored to its pair. All of the flowers have been transformed through the use of a solarization process, where the flowers have taken on a new life with deep hues and vibrant saturation—hence Enlightened Blooms! My introduction, as well as the foreword which was written by Russell Hart (the current executive director for American Photo Magazine), give detailed explanations of the creative techniques used throughout. The goal of this book was to offer admirers of photography and flowers alike a new window into viewing this common subject matter—its hope was to inspire and transform its viewers.

7. How did this book come about?

Having over 40 years of photography experience under my belt, I knew in my heart there would come a day that I would showcase my primary subject matter—flowers. This book manifested itself only after having been set from from a 25 year drug and alcohol addition, which set a fire of creative expression under me that motivated me to come forth with this book. My photography work took on new life after having been set from from addition. The motivation and inspiration that came from this release sparked ideas and thoughts about what this book would become. Enlightened Blooms speaks on the level of both its content (the process of solarization) and my own personal journey with having been set free.

8. What was the hardest thing for you about writing/creating this book?

It was actually a rather simple process because my heart was fully devoted to its creation! I was inspired by every photograph and my heart led the way to its birth. The most difficult thing came after is was completed, not knowing how the books chosen creative process of solarization was going to be judged by both the professional world and admirers of art. I see now only after having read multiple reviews and articles published on my book that it has been welcomed and praised.

9. What was the easiest thing for you about writing/creating this book?

Its subject matter—flowers. Flowers have always taken center stage of my photography work. Regardless where I travel, flowers follow me and outline every collection of work I shoot. Selecting the imagery that would be housed within Enlightened Blooms was only a matter of letting my heart pick the flowers. Having a library of over 40 thousand images, the time to find the perfect selection of florals was like going back in time and handpicking them to present to the world. It was a true joy!

10. Who are some of the authors (or artists) you admire that have inspired you?

I have followed Peter Lik for sometime now. I see a lot of myself in his work, although I can’t say I have mastered landscape photography on the level in which is images present. I also love the paintings of Georgie O’Keeffe. I feel my work often looks familiar to her work in many ways. Nick Brandt, Howard Schatz, Andy Warhol, Christopher Makos, to name just a few others.

11. If it were entirely up to you, what would the film adaptation of your book look like?

Oh this is easy. I would love to work along side of Louie Schwartzberg, who does these amazing time lapse motion photography films on flowers unfolding and blooming that take days of continuous shooting to capture. I see this film as a series of flowers blooming, and then going through the change of solarized flower into full color and saturation, and then dying-wilting, turning to black and white. The music would be uplifting and inspiring during the blooming of the flowers and then switching to a faster beat while shifting to solarization. Then it would take a turn to sad and melodramatic music when the flower wilts and falls apart. As the flowers take turns through this three tier process, the pages would turn within the book from start to finish—closing with a picture of me and Louie standing side by side. FIN.

12. What are you working on now?

This last July I photographed the “slot canyons” in Page Arizona. A put together an extraordinary folder of images filled with light and grace all shot within the red rock canyons. I have planned another trip to Iceland this coming November. I plan on combining the two collections of work (one of light and grace, the other of ice and water) and fill the pages of another tabletop book on  based on “Prayers” taken from the teachings of “A Course In Miracles.” “A Course In Miracles” is a spiritual teachings based on forgiveness and love. My hope is that Glitterati Incorporated will pick this new book up. They are in my opinion in a league of their own-exceptional!
